Overview:
Under the general direction of the Lead Ventilation Respiratory Therapist, The Respiratory Therapist is a licensed professional who provides direct and indirect patient care under a provider's orders and in compliance with the policies and procedures of Mercyhealth At Home, professional standards, and regulatory and accreditation requirementsThe Respiratory Therapist Ventilation Specialist provides Respiratory Care services to patients in their homes, clinics or at one of the Mercyhealth at Home locationsThe Respiratory Therapist is responsible for establishing and implementing care plans, educating patients/caregivers and evaluating progress toward goalsThe scope of responsibility of this position includes acting as a resource for Mercyhealth at Home staff and referral sources, as well as performing patient intake, order entry, insurance authorization and medical documentation processesRegulatory compliance to optimize the organization's revenue cycle is vital to the organization's successCustomer satisfaction is critical and this position requires eye to detail, organization, and a focus on the big picture for MercyhealthThis position follows the mission and vision of Mercyhealth.
Responsibilities:
Provides instruction to patients and/or caregivers primarily on the proper use of in-home ventilation equipmentMethods of ventilation include; invasive and non-invasiveMonitor patient's compliance and data to ventilation therapy, via cloud technologyMake critical ventilation setting adjustments/ recommendations to following physicians to maintain patients' quality of life and; prevent ER visits and hospital readmissions.
Make ventilator setting adjustment per physician's orders while working independently in patient's homeMonitor patient's vital signs to ensure no adverse outcomes to ventilator setting adjustmentsTake immediate actions as needed to maintain the health and safety of patient.
Provides instruction to patients and/or caregivers on the proper use of other respiratory care equipment including but not limited to; home oxygen, nebulizers, apnea monitors and, positive airway pressure.
Establishes and implements care plans, following provider orders, and evaluates progress toward goalsFollows clinical protocols and procedures as approved by Mercy at HomeEnsures patient and/or caregivers can effectively operate and maintain equipment by using the teach and teach back method of training.
Answers questions and concerns from patients and customers related to respiratory equipmentParticipates in multidisciplinary team patient care conferences as needed.
Following the provider's orders safely performs and documents respiratory care procedures in a manner consistent with Mercyhealth at Home policy.
Develops and implements respiratory care plans for patients receiving Clinical Respiratory Services.
Accurately enters work orders for products into the HME software system to ensure timely and accurate billing of claimsReviews and explains all required documentation at each patient contactObtains signatures for consents, education and training forms and proof of delivery as needed.
Assesses appropriateness of equipment based on the patient's ability to use and evaluates patient's home environment to ensure safe use of equipment.
Prepares and maintains a record for each patient containing all pertinent information, care plans, prescriptions and follow-up documentation.
Consults with referring provider regarding patient treatment, medical condition and home environment.
Functions independently in an on-call, after hour role to make decisions to resolve patient issues and questions and deliver equipment.
Responsible for routine patient follow-up contacts based on individual needs and department policies and guidelines.
Selects products while balancing patients' needs with equipment cost, and payer allowableVerifies patients' demographic and insurance information upon delivery to ensure accurate input to billing for reimbursementObtains required documentation in order to streamline referral processes and meet regulatory and reimbursement requirements.
Inspects and tests equipment to ensure proper operating condition.
Performs vehicle safety check per procedure prior to use to ensure vehicle is road ready and safe for use.
Loads and secures equipment to be delivered in an appropriate manner to prevent damage and contamination to equipment during transitMaintains up-to-date, accurate information regarding equipment and equipment delivery, to meet accreditation and regulatory requirements.
Completes documentation associated with delivery of products timely, in accordance with company policy and regulatory requirements.
Maintains a current knowledge base of regulatory and payer coverage guidelines to assure timely and adequate reimbursementDelays and rejections from payers can significantly impact the financial status of this product lineEducation and
Experience:
Associate's degree in Respiratory Care; and five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience providing critical care for complex respiratory patientsCertification/Licensure:
IL and/ or WI Respiratory Care Practitioner licenseRRT (Registered Respiratory Therapist) with The National Board for Respiratory CareApproved CPR or BLSFor those driving Mercyhealth vehicles:
Maintain a valid driver's license.
Have and maintain an acceptable driving record per Mercyhealth's HR.
